The San Francisco Estuary Institute, an environmental research non-profit in Oakland, is seeking to hire a Web Developer in its Information Technology group. This person will work on a team to expand the functionality of SFEI’s web products in support of San Francisco Bay and the California environment. For a decade SFEI has been one of the leading producers of environmental data and analysis for the San Francisco Bay Area, creating leading environmental web products such as the California Wetland Portal, California rapid wetland assessment software, and Historical Coast Survey Maps website.
Primary duties include
- Working closely with other technical staff to develop and maintain web applications for the Institute and its clients, particularly products addressing the management and oversight of California wetland resources.
- Staying informed on web technologies and strategizing with staff on the most appropriate technologies for our web applications.
Required skills/characteristics
- 3 or more years experience in related work
- Strong, current skills in HTML/CSS
- Strong skills in PHP and JavaScript, including for application-database communication. Knowledge of JQuery a plus.
- Skills in Java/Grails a big plus
- Organization and attention to detail are critical
Advantageous skills/characteristics
- A strong eye for elegant, functional design
- Knowledge of the Drupal content management system
- Strong oral and written communication skills. This position works routinely with Institute scientists, staff and clients, and may be called on to write technical project documentation, specifications, and/or work plans.
- Understanding of spatial data formats, tools, and concepts

$50,000-$70,000/year based on experience and skills.
